Casey C-P; a valiant effort (14 pages)

Ah, the last day of the challenge. I apologize for the image dump. I got no where near 50, but I did draw way more than the previous month(s). I had a good head of steam starting off the month, but then got a nasty stomach bug and didn't do much of anything fun for a week, let alone pick up my sketch book. But anyway, excuses, excuses, blah blah. Very fun challenge, Melissa!

These weird octopus-riders crop up every once in awhile in my sketchbooks

More work on some lettering for these guys.
Bands are the best clients: they don't pay well, but they have cushy deadlines.

Fellow insomniac sketcher, Donna Jeanne Koepp inspired me to do at least one observational drawing. I love this little chair, and the toys made for good models.

These last two are a couple characters for a concept brewing in the works. Very Northwest, no?

Onto the next challenge!

FINIS

Well, there we have it! 37 pages in 31 days. Thank you Melissa for the challenge!!

Here is what I learned:

1. Everything is interesting to draw.

2. Put down a line, put down another line, and another, and another.

3. Look at the relationships of those lines.

4. Look at the shadows.

5. Look at the values of things.

6. Just use ink, it's OK to mess up a line (turn it into something else).

7. Carry my sketch book everywhere.

8. It's ok NOT to draw everything in a scene.

9. I can draw something everyday, for some amount of time.

10. It's fun to share art.

11. It's never good enough, so finish the piece and move on.

12. There is so much to learn, I'll never know it all.

13. Keep dreaming and certainly keep drawing.

14. Faber-Castell PITT pens have quite a bit of ink in them.

15. The memory of a thing is much more vivid if it's drawn.

Off to draw monkeys and crocodiles.....see ya later!

Who designs the Kleenex boxes these days? What does the box we select say about our personalities? Do I think I'm running out of subjects to draw? .....I just need to look around more.

I've had alot of dogs in my adult life. But only one breed has been allowed on the furniture and the bed......the Scottish Terrier. I love when we decide to just "lighten up"!

Does anybody really care? Saturday.....ahhhhhh!!!!

I love ravens and am fortunate to own a sculptural wall hanging by Barbara Glynn Prodaniuk a Truckee, California pottery artist and sculpter. Thank you Leola and Barry for giving me a studio guardian who always holds the key.

I'm probably not going to read this book, but the covers would make a nice wrapper for a new sketchbook.

This caffeine drink is a staple in South America. The traditional gourd with the metal straw is an interesting way to enjoy this drink. Or tea bags are available if you don't want to look like you are doing something illegal. This is an acquired taste though, unusual, but I really like it.

The Heart of the Monkey is a Swahili Folktale I'm planning to illustrate for a SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writer's and Illustrators) local project. Thought I would sketch some references to get to know the characters.

Back in town, and time to get some serious sketching done!

Looks like Donna you have been BUSY, and what amazing sketches it has brought!! Wow, I am seriously loving these!

Pretty scrappy warm up. Will definitely be posting more over the weekend in an attempt to get caught up, and hopefully ahead of schedule.

How is everybody else doing with sketches?

I'm not a coffee snob, but I just prefer a little French coffee press taste now and again. I have this awesome stainless steel press at my work desk. The reflections have been fascinating me since I set it there. I'm not as obsessed as M.C. Escher, but this was fun to discover all the items reflected in the vessel.

This place was one of the first vineyards and winery in the area. They had gnarly grapevines 125 years old.

This is the last sketch of our little weekend getaway. Back to sketching what's in front of my face....

Apparently this place rocks with live music in the summer. They also have a "fill your own wine jug" for $10. You just have to fill it with whatever is in the cask at the time.

I was pretty much along for the "what else" did the wineries have. I like red wine, but sometimes the headache isn't worth the tasting at 10am. Mustards, cheeses, baked goods, chocolate....lots else to shop for...

Melissa Dow - Pgs 16 & 17

Two quick ones tonight. I may try and get another one in later tonight, but otherwise I will be away from a scanner until Friday night. Looking forward to seeing what everybody posts during the week. Cheers!

"Why are some of my childhood memories in an antique store?" Don't answer that!!

My Micron did not like the altitude change...big ink mess. I didn't notice until my hands were black. Oh well, a trip to Nevada Fine Arts just breaks my heart.

We all know someone, somewhere that has a relative who saved every single issue of NG in an attic or garage (a used book seller's dream). I ran into a woman once that saved every single TV Guide......??????

Laura, so glad to have you here! Your email went to my SPAM for some silly reason, and I could only see the title of it. I sent an invite hoping I had assumed correctly. :)

Donna, the sketches are SO beautiful! I wish I could even have remotely as exquisite handwriting as you do, and the gray tones you use work so well. It is definitely a lot of sketching, but you're right, the more you do, the faster and easier it gets. :)

Oh, and sadly comments only go to the blog creator. I'll see if I can switch that up though.

Hope everybody is having a good week!

Ok....here we go!

This is Sailor's Wife...and I have to confess it's in my old sketchbook from a while back that I'm still finishing as I have promised myself I'll get to the end before I start another. SO GLAD I'm not the only person who does this!

11-Donna Jeanne Koepp

I must say, drawing this much everyday is a challenge. But practice makes faster....
Thanks Melissa!!

My poor sketchbook got a pretty nasty soaking tonight, but I think it survived...and now has some 'decrative' tape, and a nice 'worn patina' to boot....woooo

Oh and Jody, a tip, if you want to edit your post (including title), just click on the little pencil beneath the post. I edited your post title for ya. :)
